The songwriter behind Indescribable describes it's inspiration .......
But those challenges were overcome when God provided more money and more songs. In 2002, Story began recording her first independent album with producer Stephen Gause and trusted that the last song she needed to round out the album would be provided. Soon after, she was driving down a mountain road, eyes fixed on the majesty of her Creator, when she started worshiping and singing, “Indescribable…uncontainable…You placed the…

Michele Bennett writes:
Every Sunday, worship leaders around the world—whether armed with a hymnal or a projector—guide fellow Christians in their worship of the living God. But directing worship is about more than just leading songs. It involves plans on Monday morning, words on Wednesday night, and intentions on Friday afternoon. For worship that pleases God is not just a matter of style or of place; both the art and the heart of worship matter.
In a new book by Crossway, Bob Kauflin explore…

Greg Brewton writes:
A number of years ago I had an interesting discussion with another staff member of a church where I served as minister of music. The church was contemplating starting a new service that would be contemporary in style. The staff member told me that he really liked the contemporary music style for worship. In fact, he said that he really could not worship unless he had that particular music style for his worship music. I was shocked by the comment at first . . . “can’t worshi…

Recently I've been involved in an exciting project called Compassion Art. In January 2008, 12 writers gathered together for a week of song writing in Scotland. The song writers included Martin Smith, Matt Redman, Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Darlene Zschech, Graham Kendrick, Paul Baloche, Andy Park, Israel Houghton, Stu G, Chris Tomlin and myself.
It was an amazing week writing together - a hub of creativity. It was a fascinating process to see how different writ…

One of the important elements in the corporate worship service is prayer. Other than songs that express our heart cry to the Lord and time spent reading and preaching His Word, prayer is one of the main ways we seek the Lord in the worship time. If we were to prioritize the elements of our worship service, I think many would say that prayer should be one of the top priorities in the worship service. But when we look at how our time is spent in worship, we might come to the conclusion that prayer…

The Apostle Paul dwells on the topic of unity in the Body of Christ in his epistles. Issues over music style (what instruments to use, what songs to sing) often bring division to the church. It would be interesting to know how many churches have split over this issue - an issue that is not even theological, but really just a matter of personal preference. Here are some thoughts to ponder when musical style questions bring division:
1. Determine that the church will not be divided over issues wh…

Over 2,300 people crammed into Central Hall for an awesome day, here's what happened
Our first ever day together at Central Hall, Westminster, right across from Westminster Cathedral and the Houses of Parliment.
1000 // Doors opened // They building staff said they'd never seen that many people at an event there. It was crazy. We eventually got everyone in!
1100 // Morning Celebration // Matt Redman led worship, Tim spoke and then we had a great time of ministry.…

"The Power of the Cross" is a meditation on the sufferings of Christ.
Over the past couple of years, we have been working through the Apostles Creed and writing hymns teaching the fundamental beliefs of Christianity. The Creed teaches that ‘He suffered under Pontius Pilate’, and in communion we are commanded to ‘remember his death ‘til he comes’. In the New Testament, Paul and the Apostles often preached and prayed in more detailed and visual ways about the cross, turning all of our senses to C…

The musical accompaniment to our congregational worship can often be too loud. This can be true in contemporary and traditional settings. I have heard praise bands who seem to think a louder volume is more spiritual and I have heard organs and orchestras who can compete on the same volume level. How does one determine the proper volume level of accompaniment for congregational singing? My basic belief is that if the accompaniment is so loud that the singer in the congregation can not hear himsel…

It’s been a while since I’ve left some thoughts on this blog… but after a fantastic trip to California it would be impossible not to. The Passion regional gathering hit Los Angeles last weekend and over 4000 students gathered at the Nokia Theatre there. As always it was a powerful time, but what struck me the most is that Passion’s heartbeat for the nations (which has always been in the mix) is being turned up more and more. During the weekend together we sowed into 4 of the forthcoming world to…

Do you ever find you get to the place where someone starts a song in worship and you think; 'if I hear that song one more time I'm going to throttle someone!'
Recently at HTB/SPOS we've been thinking about the songs we use in our times of worship on a Sunday. We have 7 services on a Sunday and for the last 3 months have asked each worship leader to send through their set lists. Our intern and budding mathematician, Beth Coulson has collated this information and come up with the graph below.
It…

The central importance of worship in the life of the church is emphasised in a new book published today by Church House Publishing for the Church of England’s Liturgical Commission, under the banner of its Transforming Worship agenda.
“Worship should honour God and, like a newspaper headline, grab people, engage them and change their lives. It should inspire and excite. It is the heart of a church. Worship is the Church’s ‘headline business’,” argues Worship Changes Lives.
The guide urges chur…
